Gionee Elife E7

Chinese handset maker Gionee has launched its new flagship phone, Gionee Elife E7, in the Indian market. The phone boasts of a full-HD screen and high-end hardware including a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor, in addition to a slim, attractive form factor. We got a chance to spend some time with the phone, here are our first impressions:

At first glance, Gionee Elife E7 looks like a taller version of the Elife E6. However, on closer inspection, you'll notice that it looks more rectangular, majorly due to the lack of rounded corners. The phone's top and bottom edges, however, are rounded, just like the ones seen in Huawei Ascend P6.

The phone is made of good quality plastic material, but sports a glossy finish that makes it prone to smudges.

The front of the phone is dominated by 5.5-inch Full-HD (JDI) display that sports a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and pixel density of 401ppi. It also features Gorilla Glass 3 for added protection. We found the display to be adequately bright, with images and text appearing sharp and crisp. There's minimal bezel at the left and right side of the display panel, giving the phone an edgy look.

The three capacitive physical buttons for Menu, Home and Back are placed just below the display. The 8MP front-facing camera lens is located above the display, along with the sensor array. There's no branding on the front.

The left edge of the phone features a sim card tray, while the volume rocker key sits alone at the right edge. The power key and the 3.5mm headset jack are placed at the top edge, while the micro USB port is at the bottom. We wish Gionee had put the Power key at the right or left edge, as its present location makes it cumbersome to use. The keys are made of plastic and offer above average tactile feedback.
Gionee Elife E7 doesn't have a removable back. The phone's back is curved and sports a glossy finish that is prone to smudges. The large camera lens (housing a 16MP sensor) is placed at the top, similar to the Nokia Lumia 1520, along with a small LED flash. There's Gionee branding towards the lower part of the back. The phone was good to hold, despite the glossy back.

Gionee Elife E7 runs a heavily customised build of Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, called Amigo 2.0, which is second iteration of its UI skin. The skin is similar to Xiaomi's MiUi ROM and doesn't feature a separate app launcher. Instead, the app icons are merged with the home screen, similar to the iPhone. Even the multitasking menu of the phone is similar to the card-based multitasking menu introduced first in webOS and now in Apple's iOS 7. During our brief use of the phone, we didn't encounter any stutters or lag while launching apps or going back to the home screen, however, we still feel that Gionee has gone overboard on transition effects and animations.

Elife E7's USP is its high-end hardware that includes a 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor, 2GB RAM (3GB for the 32GB version) and Adreno 330 GPU, and a 16MP rear camera with 1.34m pixel size. We weren't able to play around extensively with the phone's camera but clicking a casual indoor shot (under fluorescent light) in the default mode, we observed some minor noise, and slight aberration in colours, though the level of detail was pretty good.

Robot on Space mission

TOKYO: The first humanoid robot in space made small talk with a Japanese astronaut and said it had no problem with zero-gravity on the International Space Station.

Footage released by the robot's developers showed Kirobo performing its first mission on the station, talking in Japanese with astronaut Koichi Wakata as part of an experiment testing Kirobo's autonomous conversation functions. Wakata says he's glad to meet Kirobo, and asks the robotic companion how it feels about being in a zero-gravity environment.

"I'm used to it now, no problem at all," Kirobo quips.

Experiments with Kirobo will continue until it returns to Earth at the end of 2014. In the meantime, Kirobo says he wants to ask Santa for a toy rocket this Christmas.

Kirobo is programmed to process questions and select words from its vocabulary to construct an answer, instead of giving pre-programmed responses to specific questions.

The creator of the robot, Tomotaka Takahashi, said the autonomous functions meant nobody knew how well Kirobo would be able to answer Wakata's questions.

Though Kirobo had some awkward pauses and Wakata spoke more slowly than usual at times in their chat earlier this month, Takahashi said conversations smoothed out over time. "Through layers of communication, we were able to observe the initial stages of a relationship begin to develop between a human and a robot, and I think that was our biggest success," he said.

Kirobo took off from Japan's Tanegashima Space Center for the International Space Station this summer aboard a space cargo transporter. Wakata arrived in November and will assume command of the station in March.

The project is a joint endeavour between advertising company Dentsu, automaker Toyota, and Takahashi at the University of Tokyo's Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology.

Acer Iconia W4

BANGALORE: Acer India, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Acer Computer International, unveiled its 8-inch Iconia W4 tablet.

Iconia W4 tablet features IPS and zero air gap technologies providing a sharp display with enhanced clarity and brightness. It is also equipped with Windows 8.1 and the 4th generation Intel Atom processor offering faster tablet performance, upto 10 hour battery life for web browsing and up to eight hours for video playback, company officials said.

The devices cost Rs 24,999 and Rs 26,999 for 32GB and 64GB models.

The company said it expects 20% growth in the PC segment next fiscal.

"Our year is January to December, so looking at next year we think that first quarter is going to be bit static because of the uncertainty in the political part, but we believe after that it is going to grow very very strongly," Acer India Chief Marketing Officer Rajendran told PTI on the sidelines of the launch of Acer's Iconia W4 tablet.

He said: "Reasons being sentiment- India's sentiment is going to be positive; another thing is- all these fears about runway Dollar rate,Current Account Deficit - all that has kind of come under control. I don't know what elections are going to throw up, but I think there is general positive mood for change."

"If that happens, I think people will start coming back to buy," he added.

Stating that the company has not frozen the figures for next fiscal, Rajendran said "20% is not unreasonable."

"This year we are closing in December, I would say it has been flat, flat or minor positive," he added.

Rajendran said "at the more subliminal level even if I look at SMB's, corporate, enterprise-that space, may be consumers also- the time for refreshing is very relevant."

"It is not because three or four years has gone by,but the XP end of life was announced two years back, end of support is going to be there- the whole....of devices are going to be exposed to virus attacks, malware- which is bigger challenge."

"So people even in the lower spectrum of SMB are getting sensitised to this, and technology has come a long way in these three, three and half years- we think that is also going to be a bump up in terms of refresh cycle coming in," he said.

Declining to comment on company's stature in tablet market, he said: "...we want to build up momentum and build up critical mass." "...I do expect substantial increase in that segment as well- because we see the user behavior- which is very very revealing for us."

Smart Phones: Bendable screens,Iron tech

SAN FRANCISCO: This may be remembered as the year smartphones became boring.

Although high-definition displays on smartphones have gotten bigger and their cameras have gotten better, the pace of gee-whiz innovation has dawdled.

Smartphone and software makers are working on ways to snap out of this technological lull, although it probably will be at least another year or two before breakthroughs revolutionize the design and function of mobile computing devices.

In a foreshadowing of things to come, LG Electronics is boasting about the G Flex, a new phone with a curved display. Previously available in Korea and Singapore, the concave device arrived in Hong Kong on Friday.

"We want to claim this as the future of smart devices," Ramchan Woo, the head of LG's mobile product planning division, said during a recent demonstration in San Francisco.

If such visions are realized, smartphones and tablets will be equipped with display screens that can be rolled up like a scroll or folded like a wallet.

Making the devices even easier to carry around will be important if software makers want to deepen the bond between people and their phones. That could happen as smarter tracking tools and voice-recognition technology let smartphones understand habits and thoughts like a family member.

The future smartphone "will be small enough to carry with you at all times without thinking about it, and it will be essential enough that you won't want to get rid of it," Silicon Valley futurist Paul Saffo said. "It will become a context engine. It will be aware of where it is, where you are going and what you need."

The G Flex provides a peek at the shape of things to come. Despite its name, the G Flex isn't pliable. The device is slightly bowed from top to bottom, allowing it to curve toward a person's mouth when used for phone calls. It also has a curved battery, something LG says is a first for smartphones. LG applied a "self-healing" protective coat on the G Flex to automatically repair any minor scratches.

More than anything, the G Flex is meant to begin the smartphone's evolution from the primitive state of flat screens. In theory, the curved-screen technology will lead to bendable screens, which will then pave the way to foldable screens. If that progression plays out, it would be possible to fold a larger smartphone so it can easily fit into a pocket.
Another Korean company, Samsung Electronics, also is selling a concave smartphone there. Unlike the G Flex's vertical bow, Samsung's Galaxy Round curves horizontally from left to right when it's held upright. With a price tag of about $1,000, the phone is more an expensive novelty than a mainstream product.

Like LG, Samsung is setting the stage for bigger things to come. Samsung vice chairman Kwon Oh-hyun told analysts last month that the company believes it can produce a mobile device with a foldable display by 2015.

Samsung appears to be working on two slightly different concepts, according to two analysts who saw prototypes of what's in the company's product pipeline during last month's meetings. Reporters weren't given a chance to see the prototypes.

Google Nexus7 (Review)

Google came out with its first tablet - Nexus 7 - in 2012. In many ways, it changed the market. Unlike other Android tablets, which had a clunky user interface developed by Google's hardware partners, Nexus 7 used the default Android user interface. The result wasn't as pretty as the interface on a Nexus phone but it gave the tablet a clean and streamlined look.

Nexus 7 was also quite fast and portable. This made it one of the most popular Android tablets. Now Google has updated the device.

The new Nexus 7 - the name remains same and it is still made by Asus - is a different beast compared to the older tablet. But is it also any better?
Unlike the older Nexus 7, the new tablet comes with a primary camera. This 5MP camera is capable of taking decent shots in daylight. When we say decent, we mean decent for a tablet. The pictures taken with Nexus 7 lack the contrast and clarity of what high-end phones manage. But the focus is mostly right and so is the level of detail.

In low light, however, there is lot of colour noise in images shot with Nexus 7. They also come out over-exposed. If you have a high-end phone like a Nexus 5 or Galaxy S4, you should use that instead of Nexus 7 to take photos. But if you have to click a shot and you have nothing else at hand, the tablet will do an acceptable job in good light.

Powered by Android KitKat
The new Nexus 7 launched with Android Jelly Bean 4.3. It can be updated to Android 4.4. In terms of core user interface, not much has changed for Android since the days of Ice Cream Sandwich and the first version of Jelly Bean. On Nexus 7, KitKat looks clean and uncluttered.

The performance of the tablet is very good. It is fast and very responsive, although it lacks the kind of smooth animations that you see on iPads running iOS. In our use, we found that the tablet handled tabbed browsing and multitasking with ease. There was no noticeable lag. Demanding games like Asphalt 8 ran well and without any framerate issues.

High definition videos in MP4 format can be played using the default media player app. But for videos in other format you may have to download a third-party app like MX Player. The quality of stereo speakers is good. They are loud enough to fill a small room with sound.

Should you buy the new Nexus 7 or not? If you need a tablet and don't want to spend on iPad, go ahead and get the new Nexus 7.

Right now, it is the best Android tablet you can buy.

Unfortunately, with a price of Rs 20,999 it doesn't offer the kind of value that the older version of Nexus 7 offered. In fact, nowadays the entry-level version of older Nexus 7 sells for Rs 9,000, which is one hell of a deal for a tablet that runs Android KitKat and is still better than most of the other Android devices.

To summarize, here is our recommendation: If you don't want to spend more than Rs 10,000, pick the older Nexus 7. It is a great value for money! But if you can spend Rs 21,000, pick the new Nexus 7. The improvements it offers over the older Nexus 7 are significant enough to warrant the premium.

7Cool Alternatives To Apple Iphone 5s

While Apple's new flagship boasts better performance, a great camera, a fingerprint reader and various new software features, it has a hefty price tag starting at Rs 53,500.

If you want similar features but don't want to spend as much, here are some smartphones that you can consider:

Samsung Galaxy S4

Price: Rs 40,690

The Galaxy S4 has a gorgeous 5-inch display with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixel. It weighs 130g, has a width of 7.9mm, and a plastic body. The hardware includes an octa core processor (1.6 GHz Quad core + 1.2 GHz Quad core), 2GB RAM and 16GB storage, with support for 64GB microSD card. The 13MP rear camera delivers stunning results that can beat those of the iPhone. The 2,600 mAh battery manages a day's back-up with moderately heavy usage. Our favourite features in the S4 are the IR remote, screen and various air gestures.

Nokia Lumia 1020

Price: Rs 45,999

It's easily the king of camera phones. It has a 41MP sensor and delivers unmatched image quality. It also has optical image stabilisation, Xenon flash, manual focus, along with 4X loss-less zoom. The phone runs Windows Phone 8 OS on a 4.5-inch display. It's powered by a dual core processor, has 2GB RAM with 32GB non-expandable storage, and a 2,000mAh battery, that easily lasts over a day on mixed use. Its also comes with various apps and services, including free navigation and music subscription.

Google Nexus 5

Price: Rs 28,999

The Nexus devices are known for their top-end hardware at a great price. Their new flagship, Nexus 5, is no different. It's powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 Quad core processor, 2 GB RAM with 16GB storage (non expandable). It has the latest Android 4.4 OS without customisation, delivering zippy navigation and good performance.

It has a responsive 4.95-inch display with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixel. It has dual cameras - 8MP rear camera that does full HD video and a front 1.3MP camera for video calls. The unibody design looks good and has a built-in wireless charging support.

Sony Xperia Z1
Price: Rs 38,999

The Xperia Z1 is a beautiful phone that sports an aluminium and glass unibody design. More impressive is the IP58 certification for dust/water resistance. Its 5-inch full HD display uses Sony's Triluminos technology, but is not the best of the lot. The highlight is its camera, a 20 MP Exmor sensor and Bionz image processor with Sony G lens. The camera delivers good results and comes with several software features: live video streaming, effects and Info eye. It is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 Quad core processor, 2GB RAM, and 16GB storage (expandable).

Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Price: Rs 46,900

Samsung's flagship device is the most powerful Android smartphone available today. It runs an updated Exynos octa core processor (1.9 GHz Quad + 1.3 GHz Quad-Core) with 3GB RAM, and has a 32GB internal storage (expandable via microSD cards). Its 5.7-inch super AMOLED display (1,920 x 1,080 pixel) uses Wacom's pressure sensitive digitiser technology for precision input using the S Pen stylus. The device's faux leather rear panel gives it a premium look, while the 3,200 mAh battery lasts two days on a full charge. It comes with the same 13MP camera as the Galaxy S4.

HTC One

Price: Rs 42,990

In our opinion, this is the only phone that gives the iPhone serious competition in terms of design and build quality. HTC One has an aluminium unibody with a 4.7-inch full HD display. It runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 Quad core processor with 2GB RAM and 32GB storage (non-expandable). While the 2,300 mAh battery lasts just a day, the smartphone is loaded with impressive features, such as dual stereo speakers with built in amplifier, IR port and a revamped user interface. It is the first device equipped with HTC's ultrapixel camera, along with optical image stabilisation, which takes images with 4MP resolution and provides good details and natural colours.

LG G2

Price: Rs 40,490

LG's flagship device comes with a unique design. It has the power and volume buttons on the rear panel just below the camera, where your index finger usually rests. The phone has a stunning 5.2-inch display (1,920 x 1,080 pixel) with a surprisingly slim bezel. Under the hood is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 Quad core processor, 2GB RAM and 32GB non-expandable storage. What is more impressive is that despite its slim 7.9 mm design, the G2 manages a 3,000 mAh battery that easily lasts two days with moderate usage. LG has incorporated optical image stabilisation in the smartphone's 13MP camera, which delivers superb images matching those of the iPhone.

YOTA Smart Phone(Dual display)

Russian manufacturer Yota Devices has launched the world’s first smartphone with a touchscreen in front and an e-reader on the back. While the e-reader screen is made using E-Ink display that does not harm the eyes and is touch-enabled, the other screen uses a standard LCD panel.
YotaPhone’s LCD touchscreen measures 4.3-inch and has 1280x720p resolution. The E-Ink panel also measures 4.3-inch but has display resolution of 640x360p.
The E-Ink display of YotaPhone also enables users to see notifications like messages, calls, reminders, appointments, weather etc even when the smartphone display is not turned on.
Key specifications of YotaPhone are dual-core 1.7GHz processor, 2GB RAM and 32GB internal storage. It is powered by Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) software and runs on a 1,800mAh battery.
The 13MP rear camera and LED flash in YotaPhone are placed below the E-Ink display on the back; a 1MP camera is used in front.
The manufacturer pre-installs its proprietary gestures and Put2Back apps in YotaPhone. Connectivity options in the device include 2G, 3G, 4G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0.The manufacturer has launched YotaPhone at 19,000 roubles or 499 euros in the Russian, European and Middle East markets. The company has not announced when the device will be launched in the US and major Asian markets.

LG G Curved Smart Phone

LG’s curved smartphone -- G Flex -- is going international! The curved phone, earlier available only in South Korea, will soon start shipping to other countries.
LG has announced that the G Flex will be available for pre-orders in Singapore from December 8 and Hong Kong from December 13. It will hit other “key markets” of Asia by the end of the year.LG G Flex will be available in Europe early next year and hit the US market thereafter. It will reportedly be available with US telecom carriers AT&T, Sprint and T-MobileLG G Flex has a 6-inch flexible OLED screen that is curved along the horizontal axis. Though the screen is flexible by itself, the glass casing does not allow it to be bent at will. However, the phone still bends if sufficient pressure is applied on it as the glass film is thin enough to be bent slightly. The G Flex’s curved screen provides the same viewing experience from 1 feet away that a 55-inch HDTV does from 10 feet, LG claims.
Though LG G Flex missed the bus in claiming the title of world’s first curved screen phone, it still has a feature that no other gadget offers. LG has used a self-healing technology on the phone’s back, which allows it to heal small scruffs and scratches on the rear panel within 5 minutes.

This self-healing is due to a molecular substructure coating on top of the phone’s back panel and depends a lot on the room temperature; hotter the room, faster the healing. However, deep cuts that pierce through the coating will not be healed.

Key specs of LG G Flex include a 720 display, 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB RAM, 32GB internal storage and 3,500mAh battery. Just like LG G2, the new G Flex has the power key and volume buttons on the back, positioned below a 13MP camera with LED flash.
